Update on 03/16/2014

Angus’s mom says “Angus is doing awesome!!  He is a great dog and loves his family-very attached to us! He enjoys playing with Eva and going on hikes in the woods with her, and chasing the tennis ball.  He loves running and leaping and is also a snuggle muffin.
He gets along with other dogs and is a calm content dude.  He is eating well unlike at his foster home, and also gets homemade hi carb balls but is gaining weight slowly.”

Adopted on 6/8/2013

Biography

Ricca is a beautiful, large, sable, neutered, 18 month – 2 year-old GSD.  He came into GSRNE’s program as a stray.  Ricca [5] He is still very much a puppy and needs continued training and exercise to help with his typical GSD puppy antics–like his energy and mouthiness.  He currently lives with one adult and a female GSD.

He and his foster sister get along well. They like to chase each other around the yard.  He likes to pick up a tennis ball or Frisbee, trot away from her and look back like he’s saying, come get me! He has a met a couple of other dogs and has acted like he wants to play with them, but have not interacted with them.

Ricca [4] He has a lot of energy and it seems that all he needs is a good run and/or play with his foster sister outside for about an hour to keep him from being energetic in the house.  His nightly routine has been to go outside for a few minutes for a potty break, then inside for dinner, and then his foster dad will sit on the floor with Ricca (sometimes with his foster sister) and get belly rubs and play with toys. When they’re done, his foster dad sits on the couch and Ricca lies on the rug chewing on his bone while rolling around on his back. Sometimes Ricca tries to get on his foster dad’s lap to cuddle, so he is learning “off”.  Also he hasn’t been a licker but the past few days he has been very tentative about licking his foster dad’s hand and face.

He is mouthy, but has lessened since being in the foster home as they have been working on it.  Ricca [2] When petting Ricca and he’s excited, he motions like he wants to put his mouth on his foster dad’s hand, but once told “no”, he stops. He will need someone to continue working on this behavior.

He is a very intelligent pup, but seems to have a stubborn streak.  His stubbornness will eventually end if there is a food reward in it, consistency in his training and commands. He gets excited whenever his leash comes out, loves to go for car rides, walks, and runs. He is also a friendly dog and likes to meet new people.

All in all he’s a great boy!

Biography

Logan is a gorgeous, large, young, neutered, male GSD. He came into our program from a shelter asking for our help. Logan He was given up to the shelter by someone who doesn’t know the breed or knows how to care for a young, very active and confused pup.

He is being fostered in a home with two human adults (no children), two older male Rottweilers, and one male GSD.

He is very smart and takes direction well, but he will test you. He has a lot of energy and needs to play, get walked and be mentally stimulated. In his foster home, he goes on three-mile walks, plays with his foster brothers in the back yard, plays fetch, goes on car rides and attends dog training classes once a week.

He is still a puppy and is learning how to be calm and obedient and not to always be so excitable. He greets people with a wagging tail and goes over to say hello them. He can get mouthy when overly excited, but give him a quick “Uh Uh” command and he will stop.

With most other dogs, he is engaging, friendly and very licky. He will also engage another dog in play with a play bow. Logan With one of his foster brothers, he wants to be top dog and plays a little too rough, so he may not be great with every dog, but behaves for his handler as long as the handler has good leadership skills and follows through to teach him how to play easy, or not to exhibit his rough behavior.

He is crate trained, potty trained (will even potty on command) and great on leash. Because he is still a puppy, his attention span is limited at times. For example, he would rather play with the tennis ball or other dogs than focus on his time to go potty. This is typical of such a young pup that is still learning.

The person or family who adopts Logan will need to be signed up for dog training with Logan after he has been with them the first week. He will need to continue his training in his new home to bond, trust and respect his new family.

Logan loves his tennis balls, Jolly Balls, Kong, and Nylabone. Although he enjoys playing fetch, he is still learning that he needs to give up the ball so someone can throw it for him. Sometimes he just wants to play “keep away” where he will bring you an item and wait until you try to touch it and then he runs with it.

He enjoys belly rubs and will drop and roll over for you a lot. Logan will also try to climb up into your lap while you are sitting on the couch, chair or recliner. He is being taught “off” and “no”, but continues to try even though he knows he is not allowed…

#379 Duke

Adopted on 9/9/2013

Update on 08/01/2013
Duke was moved to a new foster home to work on continued training as he was taking over in the home.  duke-14 In his new foster home, he is living with two adults; one male GSD and one male Rottweiler.  He is very sweet and loving in the home.  He will give you kisses and gladly roll over for belly rubs.  He likes to hang out with you in the house and lie at your feet, or on one of the dog beds nearby.  He really enjoys being outside especially if he has a tennis ball with him, if the sprinkler is running and/or water-filled kiddie pool is setup.  He is on a structured and routine schedule, which he needs.  He was put on a bland diet and medications for his ear infection.

Biography

Duke is a large, handsome boy who will need a strong leader to not allow him to take over in the home.  In his current foster home, he is living with two adults, one male child, one male cat and a female dog.  He is a happy boy with a great personality and a medium to high energy level.  His favorite things to do are play fetch, go for walks and play in the sprinkler.  He knows basic commands; has recently learned “Shake” and is working on “Speak”. duke-7

At the beginning of his foster period, he did not get along with the resident dog in the home as he wanted to possess balls from her.  After three weeks of integrating Duke in the foster home, both dogs are now happily playing together.  For the resident cat, he would chase him in the house if the cat moved, but on occasion would go up and just sniff the cat.  The foster family has taught him “no” when he tries to chase the cat and he will usually listen.  As for his crate, he would bark and whine when in it, but soon realized that was his place to go when asked.  He now happily walks right into the crate when his foster mom picks up her keys and purse to run errands.  If given the chance, he will gladly ride in the car with you.

Duke loves tennis balls and will play fetch with you as much as he can.  You need to let him know when it is time to take a break.  Using a tennis ball is a great motivator to get Duke to do what you want—helps with his training.  In his foster home, he enjoys running through the sprinkler and laying in his kiddie pool, especially on those hot days.  He also enjoys chasing the birds and squirrels in his yard.

#388 Lexi

Update on 04/20/2014

Lexi is doing great.  She turned 1 year old on March 27. She needed to have a second surgery in mid-February Lexi [4] to remove the implants that were used to fix her front leg in October.  So the bad news is she had to be kept very quiet while recovering from her second surgery in 5 months.  But the good news is that she is healed and her leg is doing fantastic now!

She loves to play with her toys and can play fetch with the same toy for hours if you let her. She loves to play “find it” and will not give up until she finds her toy. She loves to swim and jump into the pool with a lot of enthusiasm. She is a little behind in learning some basic obedience due to her being out of commission for practically 4 out of the last 6 months.

Update on 01/26/2014 Lexi 012614

Lexi’s mom says “Lexi is healed after her surgery but she still has some residual issues with the surgery.  The plate and screws may need to come out later on.She has been doing really well overall.  It is impossible to keep her quiet. She is a real sweetie!”

Adopted on 01/22/2014

Biography

Lexi is a beautiful nine- month old, female, spayed GSD.  She came into the program from a shelter with her sister Lady.  Lexi was taken into the shelter with a broken leg that had regrown out of place.  GSRNE brought her to Tufts for an evaluation and then surgery to repair her leg.

She is being fostered in a home with two adults and two other female dogs.  The foster home worked with Lexi tirelessly during her healing process.

She is a very happy girl with lots of energy.  When she first arrived in the foster home, she wasn’t allowed to play much because she was recovering from orthopedic surgery on her front leg and it took about eight weeks to heal.  Lexi She had to learn some games like playing with puzzles since she had limited mobility.

She loves toys and her tennis ball is the most favorite toy.  She likes to carry her ball in her mouth most of the time even when she is going to the bathroom.  She will also play with her stuffed animals too.  She also likes to get into the car and go for rides.  She loves to run and frolic now that her leg has healed and the vet’s said she can be a puppy/dog; go on walks and run in the yard.

She is crate trained and potty trained.  She still needs some work on her leash walking, but is making good progress.

She definitely wants to please the foster parents and is very focused on them.

#383 Tonka

Adopted on 11/17/2013

Biography

Tonka is a young, handsome, black and tan long coat.  He came from a shelter, as a stray, Tonka who contacted us to see if we could help take him into our program.

He is a very happy dog with a sweet, sensitive, loving and playful personality.  His energy level is medium to high and all he wants to do is play, play, play.  Indoors, he likes to chew on his Nylabone, Wubba, and tennis balls.  Outdoors, he loves to take walks, chase his foster brother in the yard, and pounce on the tennis ball like a cat.  He will chase a thrown tennis ball and pick it up, but he doesn’t always want to bring it back to you.

Although he is taken on errands, excited to get into the car and rides nice in the back, he does have car sickness.  He will drool all over the car and if he has a full stomach, he will get sick.  The foster home is working on the car sickness by taking him on shorter rides to get him used to it.

With people and dogs, he is friendly.  With known people and dogs, he is extremely friendly and engaging; Tonka however, being examined by the vet is not something he enjoys.  The foster home is working on a lot of positive visits at the vet’s office to get him more relaxed and comfortable with exams.  He has had a few visits just picking up food or medication/preventatives and has had great positive reinforcements.  He seems to be good during appointments with the vet and vet techs except with a full body exam, which is being worked on.

Tonka had a previous skin condition when he was found as a stray and it was thought to have been cleared when he was in the shelter; however, he has been doing a lot of itching and scratching since arriving in his foster home, so we are working with the vet to find out the issue and try to resolve it.  He is currently on an antibiotic and gets a medicated bath once a week to help with the issue.

One thing we learned about Tonka is that he will need to be in a home with another dog as he has shown signs of separation anxiety when he is not with another dog or his people.  He does not do well in a crate (potties in it, chews at the wire to pull open, breaks out of it and has flipped it on its side), and if left loose on his own, may potty in the house and get into things as he did when he first arrived in his foster home.  After working with Tonka, he is currently in his foster home loose in two rooms with the resident dogs and seems to do very well as long as they are with him.  He is also perfectly fine sleeping on a dog bed in your bedroom with you and a baby gate in the doorway, but not if left alone and you leave the house with the other dogs.

Tonka is cute as a button with a spunky personality.  He needs a home that will care for him properly, give him attention and a good life that he deserves.  You couldn’t ask for more from such a spunky pup!

#377 Ebony

Adopted on 07/31/2013

Biography

Ebony is a beautiful, black Shepherd who needs a person/people of her own. Ebony-2 She is a happy, well-behaved dog with low to medium energy. She is crate trained, but really does not care for her crate. She will howl for a couple of minutes, but settle right down.

She likes to play fetch, go for walks, and go for car rides, but her favorite thing to do is to be with you. If you are watching TV, she will lie down at your feet, or on one of the many dog beds in the home, but still near you. She is not a dog to play by herself, she wants you to play and interact with her. If given a toy to play on her own, she will lose interest. She wants to play with you. She does not seem to be a water dog, but will step in the kiddie pool with her feet. She will also drop her tennis balls in the kiddie pool or bucket of drinking water.

Ebony has excellent house manners. She has not been trained by the foster home as she has not needed it. She has not shown any bad behaviors since she has been in the home. She wants to please her people and be with them. She is happy to do things with you or just lie down by your side.

02/01/2014 Update

Junior

Junior’s forever parents love love love him. They had their first obedience class today and Junior was the star of the class, so smart and everyone loved him and thought he was beautiful.  They then took him shopping and he was great with all the people and other dogs he met, and he got a bunch of new toys.  His dad takes him on about a 4 mile walk each day. Junior loves playing in his yard. Junior’s mom says he bounces around the yard like a rabbit. Junior is a daddy’s boy. He follows his dad wherever he goes in the house.  Needless to say Junior is in his forever home.

Adopted on 01/18/2014

Biography

Junior is a large, intelligent, handsome, young male who still needs more weight to fill out and a lot to learn.  He is an owner surrender from a family that realized they did not have the time or finances to care for such a young pup that needed much, much more than they could give.

In his current foster home, he is living with one adult, one child (age 11), one male German Shepherd, one female Russell Terrier mix and a Guinea pig.  He knows basic obedience commands, is crate and house trained.  He will need continued training to polish his current skills.

When Junior first arrived in his foster home they had to work on his manners like, not jumping up on furniture, not jumping on people and objects (keeping all four feet on the floor), chasing his tail, being mouthy, pacing (anxiousness), and how to ride in a car.  These are many things he did not get a chance to learn not to do while in his previous home.  Although he will still chase his tail at times and can get mouthy, it has lessened during his training time in the foster home.

Junior

Junior is one lucky pup since he can go with his foster mom to work (doggy day care) every week day.  He gets extra human and dog interactions to help with his social skills as well as continued reinforcement of obedience commands to give him good manners.

He is a very happy dog with a sweet, loving and playful personality.  His energy level is high and his foster family keeps him busy with a lot of mental stimulation and physical activities.  Besides going to work with his foster mom, Junior gets a lot of play time, car rides, and walks.  He even likes to splash in the kiddie pool when the weather is hot, play with a variety of toys, and play fetch.  After a day of physical activity and mental stimulation (through obedience), he loves to hangout and watch tv with his foster family or chew his toys and relax.  He really likes toys that involve food rewards.

He is friendly with other dogs and people.  He is very affectionate with the people in his foster home since settling in with them, and will do great in an adoptive home where they will continue with his socialization and training.

#384 Lady

Adopted on 12/16/2013

Lady

Biography

Lady is a very sweet, pretty, high energy and playful seven-month-old puppy who came to us from a shelter. Lady is in need of training and socialization due to the lack of it she received during her growth with her previous owner.

Lady’s foster home is working on her social skills and obedience training to help her gain confidence with meeting new people and being in new environments. She has become more comfortable and relaxed in the foster home, and will do great in an adoptive home while continuing with her socialization and training.

She loves to play with her ball and get love from the people she knows. She is shy when she first meets new people and needs some time to get to know them. Once she warms up to you, she is the sweetest dog you’ll ever meet!

Lady’s foster family keeps her busy with a lot of mental stimulation and physical activities due to her high energy level, which is typical of a puppy. She gets a lot of play time, car rides, and walks. She even runs errands with her foster mom going into banks and stores instead of waiting outside in the car.

Lady attends doggy daycare two to three times a week and is learning how to be social with all dogs. She is not the most gentle when meeting new dogs, but if they want to play with her, she will be the first one to jump in and welcome them. She is best with larger breed dogs as opposed to small ones. She can be rough in her play with other dogs and is still learning what is and what is not acceptable.

It is with tremendous sadness that we share that Simba peacefully crossed the Rainbow Bridge. This sweet boy had so many issues when we brought him into GSRNE, it is amazing to read that he lived to be 15 years old! What a gift it was for all of us to see such a wonderful dog live so long.

He was energetic up until the day before he died, when he became very weak and refused to eat. Given he was 15 and had many health issues, we felt it was in his best interest to pass peacefully. We had a licensed vet (who has also been his acupuncturist) send him over the Bridge.

Rest in peace sweet, sweet boy; your GSRNE family loves you.

Update on 12/13/2013:

Simba is doing great! His foster parents have switched him over to an allergy free kibble and canned food and he is itching much less. They have also been brushing him and applying conditioner (obtained from the vet) on his skin every day and the fur on his back is beginning to fill in. He has peach fuzz hair up and down his back now! The rest of his coat is much fuller and silkier as well and he has so much more of it that he’s beginning to shed!

His parents also started him on Adequan treatments right away as well as a daily walk schedule. He walks around the yard, which is fairly large, around 5-6 times a day. He has just begun to walk a steep incline once a day to get the mail. He actually pulls his parent up the hill now. He is limping much less and in much less need of tramadol for pain. He has also started glucosamine treatment. His mom tried adding fish oil to his diet but it gave him very loose stools. So they will put that on a back burner for now.

The vet checked his T4 right after we adopted him and increased his medication slightly. He checked his blood work again a week ago and was very happy with his levels.

And as for Simba’s temperament and personality? He is becoming more and more playful and goofy around the house, and he has begun to play with ALL of his toys and to engage me in trying to take them from him. He loves, loves, loves to roll on his back-on his dog bed, on the rugs, on the couch…you have to be careful of the flying legs when he gets going!  He is one happy boy. And he loves to visit my folks (why not, they spoil him rotten-I have to watch my mother with treats every minute), he loves our neighbors (everyone pets him and fusses over him), and he loves when David comes to stay every weekend. It’s a pretty good life 🙂

Adopted on 11/11/2013

Biography:

Simba is dog worthy of a second chance and in need of a caring and loving home! He is a love and has more energy than some of our 5 year olds! Simba came into our program with Ebony who has since been adopted. Their previous owner did not have the finances to care for them and eventually gave them up. Simba had a severe ear infection with extracting pus in both ears and a skin condition where he lost his fur on his back, neck, chest and inside of his legs. Despite his condition, he is a very sweet and loving dog with a great temperament.

Simba is currently in a one-person foster home with no other animals. He is doing great now that he is getting the proper care and treatment with medications and good nutrition. We are happy to report that his infections are clearing up and the areas of lost fur are filling in! He will be going back to the vet for some additional testing and a recheck to see how his condition is coming along and what he may need going forward.

He is a very happy dog with a sweet, sensitive, loving and playful personality. His energy level is medium to high, which is above what a dog would have at his age. His foster mom tries to keep him busy by playing fetch (one of his favorite things to do), giving him toys that he carries (a donated, stuffed, Hedgehog toy) around the house, and taking him on her ever-running errands in the car. His car behavior is great and he loves to go for the ride! He will either lie down in the back, or mostly ride on the seat and look out the window. He is a dog that wants to be with his family no matter what they are doing. One thing you need to watch for while Simba is in the home is that he steals Kleenex from the bathroom pail, but once told “uh, uh” he automatically brings it to you and releases it into your hand.

He is working on new commands like “wait” at the door before going out, or “wait” before getting out of the car, and learning to walk nicely on a leash. He knows sit, go lay down, come, off, quiet and leave it. Some of the commands need reinforcing as he doesn’t always want to listen, but knows the command. He also enjoys the attention working on learning them. He would greatly benefit by going to dog training classes with an adoptive home.

He is a very friendly dog to people, and with some dogs he can get overly excited. He will go on the alert when a dog walks by him and bark, but when called to come (when in the fenced yard), or told to stop he immediately responds. All in all, Simba is a very well-behaved dog.
