#373 Dixie

No longer by our side, forever in our hearts. Our Dixie girl crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday afternoon.
Dixie Horman Carlo passed away surrounded by her family at Tufts after a month long battle with an unknown illness on Sept 14, 2022. She was 9 1/2 years old. Dixie loved her people, to play ball and go for walks. She loved to swim in her pool, go camping and her sister Zelda. Dixie had an impact on so many lives; She was an ambassador for GSRNE and was adopted from there in 2013 at 4 months of age becoming #373. She had so many dog friends and helped convince others to adopt pups too. Dixie lived a wonderful life and she will be surely missed. Run free baby girl. We’ll meet you at rainbow bridge. 💙❤️ you’ll always be with us and we will never forget you.

#552 Elsi

Our beloved Elsi passed away just shy of her 2-year gotcha date with us.
She would have turned 13 years old on November 23rd.

We knew the moment we met her and learned her story that she would be our first foster “failure”. There was just something about the way she looked at us.

Elsi had her share of loss before officially coming into GSRNE – her littermate brother “Bear” had passed away shortly before her human Mum, Tori.
“Els” as Tori called her, spent the majority of her life supporting her Mum as she fought cancer for many years. Els seemed naturally attuned to human behavior and perhaps this emotional time watching over her Mum honed her ability to connect in a unique way. Some dogs have special gifts and they become support or service dogs- we believe Elsi had that gift.

It was clear to us that she had come from a loving home and that she had a powerful presence about her. We immediately called her the Queen and our motto became, “It’s all about Elsi”

Her beauty was majestic and people were drawn to her, but Elsi only bonded to her special people and a few furry friends. She loved car rides and we took her everywhere we could. She was content to be a part of whatever we were doing, especially outdoors.
She was fun, playful and very interactive.. She was also a good communicator. She would let out occasional barks and the random howl when she had an announcement! She loved having her toys all around her for easy pickup to greet us and transport around the house and carry outdoors.

In her early days she loved chasing her favorite soccer ball and would do a victory lap after catching it. She also loved going for walks along the wooded trails near her backyard, most times carrying her ball or picking up a large stick to proudly trot around with.
Later on we would simply spend time outdoors for hours on end and that was her happy place. We would play when she felt good until she deemed the game over by catching the ball instead of deflecting to pass.

Although Elsi was with us for only a short time, we loved her deeply and had a special connection. She was cute, funny, loving and precious. Her eyes were soulful and she was always smiling despite her many health issues. She was a fighter and so tolerant of all the vet visits, tests, pokes and pills that helped to give her a good quality of life. We enjoyed every moment of caring for her.
There was so much love and appreciation in her eyes, we knew her Mum must be watching over all of us.

Run free sweet Elsi, go find your Mum and brother and your boyfriend Aspen. You will forever remain in our hearts – Sarah and Tim

More from Loueen and Larry-
Thankfully, we are part of the rescue and lived nearby to help.
When Tori needed us, we would go every other day, and when she was feeling better, maybe just once a week, or even less. She would call and let us know when she needed help, or just to talk. We enjoyed spending time playing with the dogs and visiting with Tori for about 1.5 years.
No matter how bad Tori felt, she always greeted us with a warm smile, and Els and Bear with kisses and toys. Els’s smile was amazing and always made me smile to see it!
When we would visit, Tori would tell us that she told Els and Bear we were coming, and they had been anxiously waiting to spend time playing with us. I laughed, but by the way they acted, sometimes I believed it! 🙂 Elsi would grab her worn out soccer ball, and would be ready to head to the field with us. Her job was to carry her ball ♥
I enjoyed the time I spent with my soccer buddy very much, and I know she shined her light on many.

#608 – Howie

Howie and Elsie are doing well together.  I took it really slow but I think it paid off.  I had them loose at times in the house a few weeks ago but just started having them free together in the yard with the bigger fenced in area.  Howie can be a bit vocal during times of excitement which made Elsie not interested in the relationship.  Now that he has come down a notch I feel comfortable having them together.
This weekend we are going on a field trips for 3-4 days up North. I’m going to have him on private property walking trails in the woods.  And there is a brook he can swim in. Howie is a great fit for me and my life.  He is the apple of my eye!!

#591 Oscar

Oscar is doing well.  His Mom told us he’s the super star of his agility classes.  He also loves chasing tennis balls!

FOSTER HOME APPLICATION

Applicant Information

First
Last
Note: Some homeowner’s insurance companies will not insure or will cancel a policy if you have a German Shepherd in your residence. If you rent, live in a townhouse, condominium, or other home association, GSRNE will contact and require a written approval letter from your landlord and/or home association.
Note: With a few exceptions, GSRNE requires that Foster Homes have a fenced area attached to the house for safety reasons. Currently, we are in need of homes with fences. We have many applicants on hold to finish the Foster Home process that do not have a fence.
Wood stockade, vinyl, chain link, etc. The fence needs to be a minimum of 4' high, but doesn't have to be elaborate or expensive, nor does it have to encompass your entire yard. The fence must be sturdy and in good condition, so that a dog cannot find a way to escape. The Invisible Fence alone cannot be used for foster dogs as most German Shepherd dogs will run through the boundary.
If you do not know the exact height, please enter an estimate and note that it is an estimate.
If you do not know the exact length, please enter an estimate and note that it is an estimate.
If you do not know the exact width, please enter an estimate and note that it is an estimate.
Note: GSRNE requires that your tenant(s) and/or roommate(s) sign a liability waiver.
Note: Any children in the home or visiting regularly must be at least ten years old.
Note: GSRNE requires that your present dog (s) have been in your household for at least six months, and that no additional pets are brought into the home during the foster period. This is to ensure the GSRNE foster dog will receive your full attention in the training and stable environment required to prepare the dog for an adoptable home.
Note: Currently, we are in need of homes without cats and small dogs. Your Foster Home Application may be put on hold until there is a dog that we know we can put into a home with cats and/or small dogs. Most of the dogs we take in have a high prey drive and will chase after your small pet.
Note: If you are fostering for another rescue or shelter, and are approved after our Foster Home application process, GSRNE will wait until the foster period from the other rescue or shelter is over to place a GSRNE foster dog in your home. This is to ensure the GSRNE foster dog will receive your full attention in the training and stable environment required to prepare the dog for an adoptable home.
If this is not applicable to you, please enter "N/A" or "None" in the response.

Foster Dog

Note: Some foster dogs are in and out of rescue after 8 weeks, others typically stay 12 to 16 weeks, and others can take a while before the right home is found. We ask Foster Homes to foster a dog until the dog is placed. We need the homes to realize that the dog may be a resident for some time as we look for an appropriate home.
Note: Our policies and guidelines are in place for the benefit of the dog and the foster home. You may question some, but they must be followed.
Note: All our foster dogs are evaluated before they are approved to come into our fostering program. The evaluation is a snap shot of what the dog is about, but most of the dogs are very stressed out when being evaluated and do not give an accurate reading, so putting the dog into a foster home helps us get a better picture of the dog's personality.
Note: GSRNE will setup up an account at your vet's office if the foster dog has any medical needs. All vet services and products must be authorized by GSRNE.
Note: GSRNE will give you a list of dog food options you can choose from to be purchased for the foster dog.
If you have no preference, please enter "No preference".
As you answer this, please think about your lifestyle - are you active, in and out a lot, are there lots of people/children around, etc., or are you more sedentary, quiet, with few visitors? Is a puppy, younger dog or a senior dog best for your situation? Do you have other pets that need consideration?
