#367 Touser
Adopted on 4/12/2013
Biography
This handsome boy was turned into a shelter after his family felt too overwhelmed to care for him along with their young
At only 5 years old Touser is still energetic and loves to play fetch. His ideal play date would involve someone throwing a ball for him for hours on end! He rides great in the car, likes going on errands, and enjoys going to the dog park. Wherever he goes he’s happy and constantly wagging his tail.
Touser loves being with his foster family and is very affectionate. He’s eager to please and is very well mannered. He knows sit, stay, walks well on a leash, and comes when called. He gets along with other dogs although he prefers the company of people. He would be okay with a dog-savvy cat but will chase them if given the opportunity. He’s friendly when meeting strangers and tends to gravitate towards women.
Touser has been diagnosed with Pannus, a lifelong eye condition that can be managed with eye drops. Touser sits willingly when getting his drops and is rewarded with a treat each time. His eyes are sensitive to the sun and his foster dad is working on getting him used to wearing Doggles for eye protection.
#369 Madison (Maddie)
Adopted on 4/27/2013
Biography
Madison is a super sweet and friendly girl. Her first reaction to new dogs is bark and hackles up, but she warms right up and is friendly wanting to play with the dogs. She knows how to sit, is crate trained (previous owner said), but needs a lot of training as she pulls on the leash and jumps on people. I wanted to take her home. She has a nice, prancey gait, left ear flops, and her front paws look like they turn out a bit, but she is wonderful!
#368 Addie
Adopted on 04/27/2013
Biography
Addie loves to play and chewing on toys is one of her favorite activities.
Her house manners still need some work but she’s a quick learner. She’s a typical puppy and has been known to chew papers and steal the occasional shoe. She cries when she first goes into her crate but will settle right down. Addie is doing well with potty training and consistently goes to the designated place in the yard. She doesn’t like being told no and will pout when verbally reprimanded. She’s smart and just needs a leader that will teach her acceptable behavior.
Addie loves belly rubs, especially just before bed. She likes to grunt and groan when she lies down trying to get comfortable. She loves being with her family and curling up next to them wherever they are. She’s not the typical wiggly puppy when meeting new people; she can be a little shy but will slowly warm up to them on her own time.

“My sincere thanks to GSRNE for providing Phin and I with a wonderful journey together.”
GSRNE’s Phin has crossed the bridge. We all loved him very much and knew how happy he was with adopted family. Rest in peace, beautiful Phin.
10/5/2014 Update:
Phin has bonded very well with his Dad and is very happy. He is enjoying playtime and walking at the Outer Banks. He no longer has separation anxiety as his dad has him on a regular schedule. Phin’s dad works regularly with him on obedience training. Phin is very smart and learning commands quickly.
Biography
In April of 2013, GSRNE took in a 6-year-old male GSD named Phin. He had lived with a family that included grade-school-age children, and he had some issues that needed work; the family was moving and asked GSRNE to find another home for Phin.
We had to board him until a foster home became available, and he lost weight in the kennel and was very stressed, barking incessantly at the other dogs.
Once in a foster home, though, he gradually calmed down and began regaining the weight he had lost. His foster parents found that he had severe separation anxiety and would not stay in a crate unless it was in the bedroom at night. If one of them needed to go out during the daytime, the other stayed with Phin or took him in the car. They began leaving him for 5 minutes at a time, gradually increasing the time, and worked on obedience training. Another issue was that Phin was reactive to other dogs and definitely did not like small white dogs, so taking him for walks was a challenge. His foster parents worked with him for months and were making some progress, when they had a family health emergency that meant Phin had to be moved.
Fortunately, we had received an adoption application and done a home visit with a man who was a retired police K9 officer and who seemed like a good match for Phin. We explained to him what the issues were, and he agreed to take Phin as a foster-to-adopt candidate. It didn’t take long for him to bond with Phin and appreciate his intelligence and potential. He continued working on the obedience training and took him for 5 or 6 walks a day, and Phin has responded well.
#370 Gemma
Update on 06/15/2015
This is what Gemma’s mom has to say about Gemma- “It has been a busy but great year for Gemma girl! Despite the cold and long winter, Gemma had fun taking walks across the frozen lake-exploring new areas and even managing to set the pace during some very deep snow shoe adventures! Not unlike the rest of us, Gemma came to life with the first signs of spring. Frolicking the trails and chasing whatever wildlife she could sniff out. She loves spending time outdoors on our property swimming in the lake, basking in the sun and chasing her newly discovered passion..the frisbee! She is incredibly agile and is constantly impressing us and any guests we have with her frisbee skills. Hoping to get her into some agility training over the summer! ”
Update on 7/14/2014
It’s been just over a year since Gemma joined our family and she is such a perfect fit that it is hard to imagine what life was like without her. Gemma brings so much happiness to our lives and we hope to repay that gift by giving her the best forever home a dog could imagine. Gemma is in her element when we are on the protected nature trails located less then 5 minutes from our front door step– walking, running or trotting along side a bicycle– she always has her tail wagging. She has met a few doggy friends along the trails and has continued to impress us with her incredible recall… for which she is always rewarded for in one way or another. She loves hanging around our house and land with the waters edge as a favorite spot. She will play fetch with a stick for as long as someone is willing to throw it for her. She does great on the boat and canoe too!! She has made a good bunch of doggy friends who she enjoys chasing and playing with. Our entire family and friend group adore her and we are constantly singing the praises of GSRNE to anyone who will listen! As the saying goes “Dogs are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole.” We thank you GSRNE again for all the hard work you put into getting Gemma up to health and trained. She is the shining gem of our lives!!!
Update on 3/19/2014
Looks like Gemma is having a good time. This is what Gemma’s parents have to say about Gemma-“This winter sure has been a cold one so far! Gemma continues to bring us incredible joy and happiness-and from her constant tail wagging and kisses I’d like to believe its mutual. She is a very special, loving, social girl and truly a Gem! She really enjoys running the acres of trails within a 5 minute walk from the house. She doesn’t love the snow like Roxy did but she manages to find her sticks regardless and has been a trooper on the really cold days not getting much outdoor time. It doesn’t take long for new people or pets to become part of the pack which is nice since we are such active and social people. Warm wishes!”
Update on 10/31/2013
Here is the first update from Gemma’s parents. “Hello and happy fall!! We have had a very busy summer into fall. We have moved and are thrilled to share that Gemma is loving her new home we are on a dead end street right on a picturesque pond!! Gemma is an unbelievable swimmer and loves having endless trails to run in our backyard!”
Adopted on 5/1/2013
Biography
Gemma is true to her name – a real gem with a sparkling personality!
Sweetness and light describe this active GSD that loves being with her people and is good with cats (she will even try to initiate play with the kitties in her foster home). Initial shyness is present when Gemma first meets new people, but that quickly wears off once a friendship has been established through a pat and a treat! Back and belly rubs are favorites for this love bug, who is always happy to be in the company of her humans around the house, on daily walks, and car rides.
It’s obvious that Gemma had some training in her former life, as initially, she recognized some basic commands and is responding to obedience training in her foster home. When she thinks that no one is looking she’ll try to sneak up on the bed or sofa and then give you an imploring, tug-at-your-heart look when told “no” – but is always compliant.
This beautiful soft-eyed girl didn’t seem to know much about toys when she first came into foster care, but now she’s learning that they can be fun. She does know how to play with other dogs and loves to do so regularly with her foster sibling. When meeting an unfamiliar canine, though, Gemma still needs some training and work; she can be a bit reactive and too much “in your face.”
Gemma is trained to sleep in her crate at night and is willing do so. She does grumble about having to spend time there during the day when she would rather be with “her people;” but it’s the safest place for her to be when they have to go to work or be away from home. When she was left uncrated for a trial period, Gemma helped herself to the training treats and a box of cereal that were on the back of the counter. Being crated will protect her from getting into something that could hurt her.

We are heartbroken to report that Haley died of liver cancer on June 10, 2016. She will be sorely missed. We’ll see you at the Bridge, dear girl.
Original write-up:
Haley is an active young female (turned 5 years old in January) who lived with her owner from the time she was just 8 weeks old. They went through some difficult times together, and then her owner lost her home and had to move in with relatives; sadly, Haley was not welcome there. Her owner contacted GSRNE and was relieved to learn that we would be able to place her in a foster home and help her make the adjustment.
Haley is reserved when meeting someone for the first time, but she quickly warms up and becomes friendly and playful with visitors. She would actually become too playful with visitors in the home and would try to jump up for closer interaction. Her foster parents have been working to teach her to keep all four feet on the floor, and Haley gets it. With people she’s gotten to know well, she’s very playful and animated.
With other dogs, though, she can be quite reactive and will need further work and training on this behavior. She loves going for walks or for rides in the car.
Outside in the fenced yard, Haley loves playing with the stream of water as it comes out of the hose.
She tries to catch it and will “talk” to you about it when her mouth closes and the water escapes. She tries to help with the raking, too, and will pull at the rake and dance around in excitement. Whether indoors or out, whatever you’re doing, Haley will want to join in!
#385 Kyra
Update on 02/01/2014– Kyra is doing great
Adopted on 12/22/2013
UPDATE 10/04/13 – Kyra had her recheck by the eye specialist and has received a clean bill of health. Her eye is healed and in great condition. Her eye will only need to be checked during her annual exams with a regular vet.
Biography
Kyra came from a situation that she needed to be removed from and was put into our program. She lives in a foster home with one adult and no other animals. Krya is an absolute love bug with a lot of spunk and a dog that has quite the personality. She wants nothing more than to be your companion, but fully understands you need to make a living to give her the finer things in life!
Whatever your activity, Kyra is up for it: walks, rides in the car, running errands with you, playing fetch, or sitting and enjoying laying at your feet while watching TV. She loves to be outside and play, but wants to do so with companionship. On hot days, her favorite thing is to submerge in the cool-water-filled kiddie pool. One of her favorite toys is a Jolly Ball. If you are not careful, she may bang it into your leg to get your attention to play with her.
Kyra has been nothing but a perfect angel in her foster home. She is completely house and crate trained, has never been destructive, would never dream of climbing on the furniture, and prefers her dog bed for napping. Kyra also enjoys having her crate and is most comfortable going to bed at night there. If it is time for bed, and her foster parent is still up, she will put herself to bed (just walks into the crate and goes to sleep). She can be extremely affectionate with giving you kisses. She loves nothing more than to be patted and touched. Although when she first arrived in her foster home, she had some reservations about being touched, but has overcome this issue.
When meeting new people outside the home, Kyra is very friendly, especially when they are giving her treats. When meeting people in the home, she is more cautious, but will warm up to them once introduced to them properly. Once Kyra knows you, she wags her tail and is happy to see you. She will go to you, let you pat her, will run to the foster parent and run back to the known visitor for more pats.
When Kyra is meeting new dogs, she has no problem, but has not been permitted to engage in play with any dogs, just walks with them, and meets them at different places like the vet’s office, groomer, etc. Her play can be rough and she likes to chase, especially after the bunnies and birds in her yard.
During Kyra’s time in her foster home, she started to show an irritation with one of her eyes. After having it checked by a regular vet and then an eye specialist, we learned that she had an ulcer on the cornea that needed to be surgically removed. Kyra is now on steroid therapy and has a recheck, so once approved by the eye specialist, she will only need her eye to be examined annually by a regular vet.
#386 Hank
Adopted on 12/30/2013
Biography
Hank is a handsome, 5-year, 7-month old, black and tan, male GSD.
Hank has quickly fallen into his routine with his foster family. He easily goes into his crate at night and when his foster mom and dad go off to work during the day.
He gets very excited when the door which contains his leash is opened.
Hank enjoys keeping his foster mom company while dinner is being prepared and munching on his carrot treat before his meal is served! He does not beg, but will sit quickly for you if he knows that a treat is going to be given to him.
Currently, one of the two toys he enjoys is his hedgehog stuffed toy. He will carry it around or squeak it, but does not tear it up. Although he also enjoys his Kong rubber ball, he really doesn’t like or know how to play fetch. Hank is a dog that wants to be with you and spend time with you. He also enjoys going on car rides and running errands with his foster family.
He is a sweet, loving and happy dog that enjoys being with his people!
#372 Kelsa
Kelsa celebrated her first birthday on 2/12/2014 at at Hanover, MA Petco
Adopted on 06/13/2013
Biography
The first thing most people notice about Kelsa are her eyes; she looks right at you with a direct and confident gaze.
Kelsa loves meeting people and will run right up and put her paws on a leg or will try to jump up; we’re working on teaching her to sit instead, but her enthusiasm still gets the best of her. She’s just beginning to learn that there are some rules and limits, and she does very well with a consistent schedule. Her house training was delayed because of the diarrhea she had as a result of the Parvo, but she now has normal stools and is whining to let us know she has to go outside. She doesn’t yet stay dry overnight, but she does well during the day as long as we take her outside as soon as she wakes up from a nap. When she’s been up and active for an hour and a half or a bit longer, she gets very mouthy and will pull on clothing and grab skin. At that point, she needs some quiet time in her crate and falls asleep within a few minutes. She’ll nap for an hour or more and then whines to let you know she needs to go out and is then ready for another play session. Her mouthiness at this age would be painful and frustrating for children, so she would need close supervision with them, even at this age.
