5-year-old Akylla is truly a miracle dog that needed a village and an incredibly dedicated foster family to save her life.  In July, we received an urgent plea from an emergency vet.  The police found a dog hit by a car and the clinic’s team found she had a fractured hind leg.  During the night they worked to stabilize her, assess any other physical injuries, and provide her with much-needed pain relief.  When the clinic was able to contact the owners, they learned the dog’s name was Akylla.  The owners told the attending vet they’d been trying to rehome her over the past several months as she kept getting loose from their unfenced yard and said they weren’t able to care for her.  Given the dog’s upcoming medical expenses, they decided to sign her over to the hospital who then contacted us for rehoming help.  An extremely generous donation was made by the Greyson Hound Fund which paid for Akylla’s surgery while we made arrangements to move her to foster care.  We had newly approved fosters who were moved by Akylla’s tragic story and once she was recovered enough she went to their home, but not before we learned that Akylla was also heartworm positive and would need treatment for this deadly parasitic infection.

But the story is just getting started.  Not long after her arrival, Akylla’s fosters came home one day to find her giving birth to puppies!  She delivered 8 pups, 3 of which sadly did not live.  However, all 5 surviving dogs found loving homes and are thriving.  Akylla was a loving mom to them all.  However, likely due to the stress put on her by the entire ordeal, Akylla did have some complications with her own healing including the development of a wound at the site of her cast, poor bone growth, and broken hardware.

Akylla’s foster family’s commitment to her never wavered and they nursed her back to health.  When beautiful Akylla went to her follow-up, an X-ray showed calcification had grown over the broken hardware and she would need no more follow-up or surgeries.  As additional testing was started to begin her heartworm treatment, we learned she had miraculously cleared the infection.  This was truly a miracle!

Now this girl that so many of us have grown to love, can enjoy her well-deserved “happily ever after” with her foster family, who fell in love with her and her sweet disposition.  She is joined by one of her puppies, Odin, who’ll be growing up with mom.  Congratulations Ayklla, GSRNE #663!
