German Shepherd Rescue of New England works with shelters, animal control officers and owners throughout the six New England states to find German Shepherds new, loving, forever homes.

We understand that making the decision to rehome your German Shepherd Dog was not an easy decision for you to make. And you still may feel conflicted at the thought of giving up a beloved member of your family.

While it’s always best for a dog to stay with its people, we understand an owner may face extenuating circumstances that make it impossible to keep a dog. In those cases, our Intake Team is able and willing to talk with you to learn more about the situation and to determine if GSRNE might be able to offer rehoming assistance.

It’s important to remember that GSRNE is a foster-based organization. This means we don’t have a physical shelter, so any dog we take in is placed in a foster home prior to adoption. Whether we can take in a dog, and the timing of that intake, depends greatly on the dog itself and the availability of a foster suitable for the dog. Owners often ask us how long the process takes to determine whether we can help. There are several variable to our process and while we don’t commit to a timeline we work as quickly as we can and realize some owners may have urgent situations.

  • Contact GSRNE using the following Surrender Contact Us form or by calling 978-443-2202, Menu Option #2, and leave a message.
  • A member of the Intake Team will call you to get information on your dog and as a result of that initial conversation, let you know if GSRNE can proceed in working with you. You will also receive other options for rehoming your dog or suggestions for handling issues with your dog.
  • You will receive a follow up email with what additional information is required if you can continue in the process. We will need the completed Owner Questionnaire (a link is provided), photos of your dog, and current vet information for your dog.
  • Once all the required items are received the Intake Team will review the information and determine if we can proceed with considering your dog for intake.
  • You will be notified by your Intake Team representative of whether we can proceed or cannot consider your dog for intake..
  • If your dog meets the requirements to proceed with the rehoming (surrender) process, the information will be provided to and discussed by the Board of Directors.
  • Your Intake Team representative will advise you if we can proceed to the next step which is an evaluation of your dog, or if the Board of Directors found reason not to proceed.
  • If we proceed with an evaluation, the evaluator will contact you to set up a date and time for the evaluation. Please understand that GSRNE is made up of volunteers and their time is valuable and limited.  Make every effort to accommodate when the evaluator can meet your dog.
  • Once the evaluation is completed, the evaluator will send a report to the Intake Team and the Board of Directors for review.
  • Your Intake Team representative will advise you of the outcome of the evaluation and whether your dog was approved to come into GSRNE for placement.
  • If accepted by GSRNE, you will be advised of the next steps.

Keep in mind that this process may take some time, so please be patient.  GSRNE is an all-volunteer organization and the volunteers have families, dogs, and jobs of their own which also require their attention and time.
