Just before Thanksgiving, we were contacted by a shelter about this young male, named Scrappy. He had been surrendered by an owner who lived in a small apartment and also had a Shitzu; the family no longer wanted the German Shepherd pup.
With no foster home available, and Scrappy not doing well with the limited chance for exercise at the shelter, we moved him to a boarding kennel. He’s been friendly and playful with all the daycare dogs at the kennel, and he does well meeting people after a calm introduction. On walks, he does well on leash and has been learning to walk on the left side; he gets distracted easily, but he’s still a youngster. He LOVES playing fetch with a tennis ball or Jolly ball and quickly responds to his name when called over for some attention. The trainer at the kennel has been making sure he doesn’t forget “sit,” “down,” and “wait” while he’s there and makes it fun with frequent treats.
Scrappy has been boarding with us for a while and seems ready to meet his potential adopter. We’re hoping someone will give him a chance and be willing to work on his house training. He gets taken out to a play yard six times a day and understands about doing his business outside. At night, though, he’s in his kennel run from about 8 PM until 6:30 or 7 the next morning, and he does have “accidents” before getting outside again. In a home where someone can establish a routine for him, so he can go out later in the evening, at 10 or 10:30, he should quickly catch on.
