With his bold black markings and tan accents, two-year-old Oscar
is a handsome dude indeed.
His original owner is in the Air Force, and he and his family are
being deployed to another country. They could not find housing
that would accept a German Shepherd and contacted GSRNE for
help. Oscar was good friends with the two children in the family,
ages 11 and 12, and we had a foster home with two children in
their teens. We were hoping that would help him to adjust and
move on from missing “his” kids.
In foster care, Oscar is the only pet in the home, which is probably
the best scenario for him; he’s not really comfortable when seeing
another dog on his daily two-mile walks. He does have some prey
drive, especially if he sees a deer, but he did live with a cat in his
original home. People admire him when he’s out for a walk and
ask to meet him, but Oscar is not really comfortable with that;
he’d rather be admired from a distance. His foster parents know
it’s important to supervise any introductions and to give Oscar
time to become more comfortable before meeting a stranger.
His foster Mom carries treats on their walks and is quick to regain
his attention if he starts to become distracted. At home, Oscar is
a very affectionate boy and likes to stay close to his people; he’s
eager to please and very loving with his foster family. He’s also
comfortable in his crate, though, when his family members are all
out at the same time. One of his favorite activities is to play fetch
in the fenced yard with whoever is willing to throw the ball for him
so he can give chase and bring it back again and again.
Oscar and his foster Mom have been working with a trainer to
improve his comfort level around other dogs and strangers. If
you’re looking for a dog who will bond closely, loves to play, rides
well in the car and you have GSD experience and enjoy training,
please ask us about Oscar!
