Mavis owner contacted us hoping we could help her find her beautiful, white shepherd a new home.  She had a 30-pound tortoise that was allowed to roam roam the fenced in back yard, and in the last 2 years, Mavis starting attacking it and had bitten the tortoise to the point where she had to be muzzled when she was outside.  The owner was 65 years of age and a cancer survivor and told us Mavis became too much for her to handle.  Mavis was barking incessantly when she was let outside and would get into mischief when left there.  The owner wanted to be sure Mavis was placed in a safe home and would be well cared for.  At 6 years old she had not been spayed or seen by a vet except for a visit for a rabies vaccination;  in the last year, that was done at a local tractor supply store.

When we went to meet her it was obvious she did not have much exposure to people and the outside world —she was fearful at first but, warmed up quickly to our volunteers and eagerly went off the property for a walk with them.  She took treats nicely and they could see the gentleness in Mavis, and the good dog she was.  At the time we did not have an open foster home but, had an approved adopter that was interested in adopting a white GSD.  We were grateful when they opened up their home to her.

We asked one of our trainer’s to help Mavis foster parents with some of the nuisance behaviors she was struggling with.  He was very impressed how far she’s come in the last few months, and how well adjusted and comfortable she is with her new family. Mavis is very happy in her new home and they absolutely adore her!
