At 3 ½ years old, Leroy is a handsome male German Shepherd who can still act like a puppy at times.  He loves playing with his Jolly ball and fetching a tennis ball, but he will break that off if he spots a squirrel; he seems to regard chasing squirrels out of the yard as his main job.

He also loves going for walks and will walk nicely, right by your side.  He does get excited if he sees a squirrel or a rabbit and needs reminders to keep walking.  If another person and dog appear, Leroy will slow down and watch them and then needs to be encouraged to keep moving.  His previous owner told us that he was attacked by another dog when he was a puppy, and he still can be wary when seeing a dog he doesn’t know; he did live with two small dogs in that home and with two young children, ages 4 and 7 and was very attached to them.

Leroy bonds well with women, and his foster Mom said he follows her as she moves around the house.  He loves tummy rubs and will roll over on his back to ask for one when he’s feeling relaxed.  It took him longer to bond with her husband, and that seems to be the case with all the men he meets….it takes him a while to feel comfortable.  Now, though, he’s also attached to his foster Dad and loves the time they spend together.  He will sometimes try to climb into his foster Mom’s lap when she’s sitting on the couch, but an “off” command and gentle push is all he needs as a reminder that he’s not really a lap dog.

We’d love to see Leroy find his forever home with someone who will understand that he has to be slowly introduced to new things, including new people, before he can feel comfortable. Someone who wants a best friend around most of the time and who will have the patience to continue socializing him gradually.  Leroy does have separation anxiety and has learned to stay in a sturdy crate when no one is home.  When his foster Mom returns from an appointment, Leroy is so happy that he wants to jump but knows that’s not allowed…so he gives a little half jump.  He has a lot of love to give and is looking for the right person to share it with.
