Astro is a sweet and affectionate boy who loves to be around his people; he’s inquisitive and observant with plenty of energy and an impressive nose for finding things. He loves to do “sniff” walks through the woods and jumps willingly into the car for a ride to a walking trail. At home, he enjoys playing with his Jolly Balls, playing fetch, soccer, Keep Away or finding treats hidden around the house.
This handsome 8-year-old was with his original owner since he was 7 weeks old. Sadly, she was battling an aggressive form of cancer and had learned that her prognosis was not good. She wanted to make sure that Astro would find another loving home while she was able to advocate for him, and she was grateful when GSRNE found the perfect foster home for him. Astro has Pannus, which was caught early, and he is treated with eye drops once a day to keep his eyesight good. He also has seasonal allergies which are treated with Cytopoint injections twice a year. His owner donated funds to help an adopter with any expenses over the years.
Astro’s foster Mom has told us that he LOVES the snow and prances through it, “snowplowing” with his nose, frenetically digging in snowbanks and rolling around on his back as if making snow angels. He will demolish any large ball of snow he sees, so Snowmen beware!
In his previous home, Astro lived with cats and another dog, and he showed that he missed the other dog very much when it was rehomed. He can be leery and a bit reactive to unfamiliar dogs; but with proper introductions and supervision, he has done very well. He also wants to chase moving vehicles but is learning to control that impulse. He will bark when first seeing someone unfamiliar, but he has been friendly and social when introduced.
Astro would do well in an active home with adults and older children; he has not met young children. He is energetic and bright, needs exercise and mental stimulation, and he also loves snuggling on the couch.
