In late July, we received a heartbreaking call… A family member reached out after her cousin had unexpectedly passed away. When he was found, he was in his bedroom… and his two loyal dogs were right there with him. They had refused to leave his side. Devoted to the very end.
Authorities were called. Animal Control took possession of the dogs and told the family that although the dogs had no behavioral issues, the shelter was overcrowded and euthanasia was likely. Imagine hearing that not only grieving a loved one, but being told his faithful companions might lose their lives simply because there was no space.
Two weeks later, this incredible family member stepped in. She reclaimed the dogs and made the selfless decision to move into the home so they wouldn’t be alone. She committed to caring for them as long as she could, knowing the house would eventually need to be sold. Neighbors rallied around her, taking turns letting the dogs out, playing with them, and making sure they felt love during such an uncertain time. When we heard their story, we knew in our hearts we had to help. How could we not? These boys are only 3 and 7 years old. They lost their person… they should not lose their lives too.At the time, our foster homes were full. The few openings we had were reserved for emergency shelter cases dogs at immediate risk. So we placed Max and Jax on our waitlist, and this devoted family and their community continued to care for them until we could bring them into GSRNE.
