Jane is a 1.5 to 2 year old, pretty, friendly, unspayed female (she will be getting spayed
in April, due to a January heat cycle). On the small side, she is 45 to 50 pounds of adorable,
sweet little lady. She entered foster care at the end of December, and has been charming her
way into her foster family’s hearts ever since. As do so many of her fellow German Shepherds,
she has a strong personality, incredibly expressive ears, and animated facial features, and she
communicates with those looks that GSD people know so well.
Most humans that have met Jane describe her as “energetic and playful.” She loves to
be outside on a long walk, in a pile of snow, or playing tug-of-war or fetch in her fenced-in yard.
While she is a touch over-exuberant at times, her heart is in the right place, and she loves
meeting new people. Her foster family is working on her tendency to jump when she greets
visitors, as well as her overall manners on leash and basic commands knowledge. But she is
eager to please and has been making slow, but steady progress on these behaviors while in
foster care.
As is the case with most young GSDs, she is very energetic and requires a great deal of
regular play and exercise time. She also needs consistent training, which she had not received
prior to her surrender. She was crate-trained, but often left for a long period of time, and would
have occasional accidents due to not being brought out enough. She got along with other dogs
and was not food or toy aggressive (though she is still working on surrendering her toy to
humans during play), simply opportunistic when she would steal the other dog’s food at
mealtime, while no one was looking. Her biggest behavioral issue is that she came to us not
knowing right from wrong, and she needs a devoted, consistent family that will provide her with
that attention and activity that will allow her to settle in and behave as required to thrive is a
forever home.
While her foster family does not have cats, she did have a history of chasing cats at a
younger age, prior to being surrendered. That behavior was a large part of why she was
surrendered to us in the first place. However, we have no way of knowing how she would be
with them at this point, now that she has had some training, and is learning what she should
and should not do.
Jane, while coming to us in need of some training and basic manners, will make an
excellent family dog due to her sweet and fun personality. A family that is willing to work with
her and teach her what she needs to know, will have the privilege of a wonderful companion
and protector as Jane grows and settles in to her forever home/pack.
