Many instances of owner surrender are due to financial hardship. There are many organizations that can help with owner retention. GSRNE hopes this information is helpful to owners seeking assistance with the medical needs of their dogs. Visit these websites to see if they are still accepting requests for assistance, and if you qualify and meet their criteria.

Animal Rescue League of Boston (MA)

Community Veterinary Services

The Animal Rescue League of Boston’s (ARL) Community Veterinary Services serves animals and their families in the communities where they live including the Spay Waggin’, the Community Surgical Clinic and the Wellness Waggin’.

Best Friends

A comprehensive list of resources that offer financial assistance for pet guardians who are struggling.

Brown Dog Foundation, Inc

Provides funding to families with a sick pet that would likely respond to treatment, but due to an unforeseen circumstance, there is not enough money immediately available to make it happen.

The Brutus Fund (NH)

Created to help owners with short term financial difficulties help pay for their pet’s veterinary care. Funds are provided to those owners that qualify, and owners are asked to give back when financial stability returns for them.

Canine Cancer Awareness


An organization dedicated to fighting canine cancer. It helps sponsor the veterinary costs of dogs diagnosed with cancer for families in financial need who wouldn’t be able to afford treatment.

Care Credit

The Care Credit healthcare credit card can be used to help finance your pet’s veterinary needs.

Frankie’s Friends

Provides grants to help with the cost of lifesaving or life-enhancing emergency or specialty care for pets whose families cannot afford the full cost of treatment. In addition to Frankie’s Friends’ support, qualifying families are responsible for a portion of the treatment costs for their pets. The veterinary hospitals at which the pets are treated also assist by giving discounts.


Handicapped Pets Foundation


Updated October 2021

Dedicated to the health and well-being of elderly, disabled, and injured pets. Organization donates mobility equipment to pets in need.

Help A Pet

Provides financial assistance nationwide for medical care of pets whose owners are unable to afford the expense.

The Magic Bullet


Provides financial assistance for dogs and cats with cancer.

Massachusetts Animal Coalition (MA)


Provides a list of resources for animals in need including low-cost veterinary services and financial assistance.

Merwin Clinic (MA)

Founded on the principle that no pet should be denied medical care due to the financial status of its owner, the Merwin Animal Clinic provides free or low-cost medical care to walk-in patrons.

Mosby Foundation


Organized exclusively for charitable purposes, to assist in the care of critically sick, injured, abused, and neglected dogs through financial support and public education.

MSPCA Angell (MA)

Pet Care Assistance

MSPCA-Angell Pet Care Assistance (PCA) benefits only patients and clients treated at the MSPCA-Angell. The fund is limited and clients must meet financial eligibility criteria in order to qualify.

Paws for a Cure

Provides financial assistance to qualified families throughout the United Sates who cannot afford veterinary care for their beloved furry family members without our help.

The Pet Fund

Provides financial assistance to owners of domestic animals in the U.S. who need veterinary care.


The Potter League (RI)

Provides low-cost veterinary assistance to qualified residents of Rhode Island.

Red Rover

Relief — Emergency Care

Provides financial assistance, resources and emotional support to pet guardians struggling with economic hardship when pets need urgent and emergency veterinary care, as well as support and resources to help victims of domestic violence escape abusive environments with their pets.

Reidel and Cody Foundation

Funds cancer treatments for owners who cannot afford them when their pet has a good chance of survival and quality of life with treatment.

RIVMA Companion Animal Foundation (RI)

Provide funds to the state’s participating veterinary practitioners for compassionate care of pets whose owners are unable to pay.

Second Chance Animal Services (MA)


Provides wellness exams, sick visits, surgery, x-ray, ultrasound, dental care and more plus weekly vaccine clinics and low-cost spay/neuter services. Hospitals are open to everyone and offer subsidized rates for qualified households as part of its Community Healthy Pet Initiative.

Shakespeare Animal Fund

Founded after the loss of a beloved cocker spaniel “Shakespeare”. He died after a very costly illness, and in his memory this fund was founded to help others who might face financial problems while trying to save their pets.
