A handsome, large, Sable male, ten years old, Nitro was a bomb-sniffing dog in Iraq and Afghanistan; he did three tours in all.  When he was ready for retirement, GSRNE was contacted and asked to find him a forever home.  There was a large lump on his neck, which was removed during a vet appointment and found to be non-cancerous.  During the surgery, however, a tumor was found on his tonsil; and a biopsy revealed that it was tonsular carcinoma.  The veterinarian told us that Nitro might only have four to six months to live and that he would eventually lose interest in eating, start coughing and have trouble breathing.  That was in May 2013, and Nitro is still showing his normal interest in eating and enjoys a daily 30-minute session at the dog park with his foster brother and foster Dad.

In August, he had three tumors removed from one leg, and the veterinarian was surprised and happy to report that the tumor on his tonsil was in remission.  Nitro has been making guest appearances when GSRNE volunteers do an information table at a Petco store in his area, and people have been lining up to have their picture taken with this canine war hero.  His foster Dad is a member of the New England Vikings Motorcycle Club, and they have become his honorary adopters and are buying his food and giving him special attention when he attends their meetings.  Because of the uncertainty about his life expectancy, Nitro will stay with GSRNE.  His medical expenses so far have amounted to $3,707, and we are grateful to be able to provide him with the excellent care he deserves.
